Happy Holidays Grade 1 families! Wishing you all the best in the new year and a lovely Winter break.
What an exciting week we have had! The students did a wonderful job at their Hip Hop performance on Tuesday night. Huge thank you to all the kiddos for their amazing work and bravery performing, of course huge thank you to Mrs. Odegard and Coach Kat for their work around this as well, SO PROUD of you all!
One of our learning intentions for the week, was around the Polar Express!
English Language Arts & Literature (ELA-L)
- I can listen to a story and talk about what happened first, next, and last.
- I can describe the characters and where the story takes place.
- I can share how the characters feel and explain why.
- I can make connections between the story and something from my own life (traditions, holidays, family).
- I can talk about my favourite part and explain my thinking.
- I can draw a picture and write simple sentences to show my ideas about the story.
Social Studies – Belonging, Traditions, and Community
- I can talk about holiday or winter traditions that are special to me or my family.
- I can explain how the characters showed kindness and helped each other.
- I can share how we can make others feel like they belong (like the characters did).
- I can compare traditions from the story to traditions in my community.
- I can describe how people celebrate winter in different ways.
Wellness – Emotions, Relationships, and Citizenship
- I can notice how characters feel and what helps them feel safe.
- I can talk about ways to show kindness to classmates and friends.
- I can listen respectfully while others share their ideas.
- I can work with classmates to complete a group activity.
- I can explain what I can do to make our classroom feel welcoming.
Numeracy (Optional Extensions)
- I can count how many characters are on the train or in a picture.
- I can notice patterns in the movie (bells ringing, train wheels turning).
- I can compare sizes and shapes (tickets, bells, train cars).
- I can sort characters or objects based on attributes (e.g., type of clothing, job, colour).
Art & Creative Expression
- I can draw a meaningful picture from the story and explain it.
- I can use colour and shapes to show what I learned from the movie.
